Nuclear Is Back — But the Real Risk Is Supply Chain, Not Technology

CEO Strategic Leadership Series

Energy Sector

A North American nuclear renaissance is underway. Small modular reactors (SMRs), microreactors, life-extensions, and next-generation designs are attracting political support and private capital. But while the narrative focuses on technology viability, the real bottleneck is far more mundane: supply-chain capacity.

There are not enough fabricators capable of producing nuclear-grade components. Not enough welders with ASME certification. Not enough engineers with reactor-design experience. And not enough domestic suppliers with the QA/QA programs required for nuclear-class parts.

Canada’s SMR roadmap and the US DOE initiatives both assume a manufacturing and construction ecosystem that does not yet exist. Expanding it will take years of investment, training, and regulatory harmonization.

Three systemic risks are emerging:

  1. Component scarcity will push project timelines beyond economic viability.
  2. Labour shortages will escalate costs and create competition between nuclear, LNG, and industrial megaprojects.
  3. Vendor bottlenecks will centralize risk and undermine supply diversification.

Executives in energy, mining, heavy industry, and manufacturing must recognize that nuclear’s bottleneck is now industrial ecosystem readiness — not public acceptance or licensing.

Companies planning to rely on nuclear for long-term load must engage proactively with the supply chain or risk years of project delay.
