RFID

RFID trends in retail in the Canadian Market. RFID technology is rapidly growing in the Canadian retail marketplace and it is destined to transform the consumer-retailer relationship. The time is coming when the technology will allow retailers to instantly record every item a customer puts into their grocery cart – and what they put back and at which point in the shopping experience.  It will also enable businesses to track product at every stage of its lifecycle, from manufacture to sale and can therefore allow for improvements in supply chain management.

Aging inventory will be easier to identify and price or other promotions can be put into place to promote its sale, for example.  In cases of a high demand product, suppliers will be able to make better commitments on delivery times to customers as there should be increased visibility to the product while in transit and will allow for expedited turnaround at the warehouse or distribution points. There are some concerns about consumer privacy and rights as retailers will be better able to match products purchased to a specific purchaser, particular for payments made with credit, debit or with store loyalty cards.  There also would be some ability for stores to track the goods post-purchase.
