Pay Equity In Canada

Pay equity refers to the principle that individuals who perform work of equal value should receive equal pay, regardless of their gender, race, or other characteristics. In Canada, pay equity laws and policies are intended to ensure that men and women receive equal pay for work of equal value.

Federal Pay Equity Act

The Federal Pay Equity Act applies to employers in the federal public sector and private sector organizations under federal jurisdiction. The provinces and territories have their own pay equity laws and regulations.

The Pay Equity Commission is responsible for enforcing the Pay Equity Act in the Federal jurisdiction. Each Province and Territories has their own enforcement agency.

In recent years, there have been efforts to strengthen pay equity laws and regulations in Canada, with a focus on increasing transparency and accountability for employers. Some provinces have also introduced legislation to proactively close the wage gap by requiring employers to conduct pay equity audits and submit reports to the government.

The wage gap between men and women in Canada still exists, and it is more pronounced for women from marginalized communities. Efforts are being taken to close the wage gap by increasing transparency, accountability and proactive measures.
